Running Wild And Lookin' Pretty

Nick Gilder : Hot Child in the City

I was doing a story about a serial contest winner in Charleston, South Carolina who quick-dialed his way onto a radio station's hot line. When the DJ answered all he had to do was name the guy who was singing "Danger in the shape of something wild,/Stranger dressed in black she's a hungry child." And he couldn't. Jesus Christ, I'm thinking, it's obviously Nick Gilder.

Gilder says he wrote the #1 song, which first charted in June of 1978,  about teenage prostitution.

"I've seen a lot of young girls, 15 and 16, walking down Hollywood Boulevard with their pimps. Their home environment drove them to distraction so they ran away, only to be trapped by something even worse. It hurts to see that so I tried writing from the perspective of a lecher – in the guise of an innocent pop song."
