Wire : Three Girl Rhumba
On April 1 and 2, 1977, live at The Roxy, the English punk band Wire played ten songs that would appear on their classic debut Pink Flag . To almost no applause. At least that's what it sounds like on the recording. Wire had dropped guitarist George Gill and become a somewhat minimalist four piece group. EMI producer Mike Thorne recorded the gig and told writer Wilson Neate:
They were very solid indeed, playing to bout 20 people. Nevertheless, everybody was engaged, and during their set someone shouted, "That's better. Now louder and faster!" Even on the rough mixes it was clear they had a very powerful presence."
