Midnight Oil : Powderfinger
In November of 1978, Midnight Oil released its self-titled debut album.
Drummer Rob Hirst, and guitarists Martin Rotsey and Jim Moginie first played together as The Farm before recruiting a tall, lanky and bald law student named Peter Garrett through a newspaper ad. After they added bassist Andrew "Bear" James, they changed their name to Midnight Oil and earned a reputation for raucous live shows. With no record labels calling, the Oils established their own label, Powderworks. They recorded the debut album in ten days and promoted it with concerts benefitting Greenpeace and Save the Whales.
Midnight Oil would remain dedicated to political and environmental causes, selling 21 million albums over their career. Garrett would enter politics, serving as Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts under Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. and then a Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth under Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
Last year the Oils reunited for The Great Circle Tour performed 77 concerts in 16 countries. Their Armistice Day concert was recorded and is scheduled for release on November 9, 2018 as an album, DVD and BluRay.
