Dirty Looks : Lie To Me
In March of 1980 the Staten Island new wave band Dirty Looks released its "Lie To Me" single. Signed to Stiff Records, the trio spent a busy day shooting three music videos without permits for the upcoming self-titled album. The band launched the record by riding the Staten Island Ferry tio Manhattan and appearing unannounced around lunchtime on a flat-bed truck complete with PA and drums outside US distributor Epic Records where they entertained office workers.
Guitarist Patrick Barnes, bassist Marco Sin and drummer Peter Parkers should have been bigger. They did sell 100,000 copies making their debut album the most successful Stiff album in the United States.
In the UK, critics responded with contempt and a Son of Stiff Tour later in the year did nothing to win them fans. Instead, Dirty Looks are one of this year's great discoveries for me.
