Cold As Ice Cream

Blondie : Sunday Girl

In May of 1979, Blondie's new single, "Sunday Girl" b/w "I Know But I Don't Know", shot up the U.K. charts from nowhere one week to #10 the next week to #1 for three straight weeks. Both tracks are from Parallel Lines which was finally breaking in the United States thanks to "Heart of Glass" finally hitting #1 a week earlier.

In his book, Blondie, critic Lester Bangs wrote :

"Sunday Girl" is like Sunday afternoon TV. Either that or the closeness of the Other is only bearable because of this context of utter becalmitude, the motionless air of the day of rest. Song's about a pillow, not a girl.

Good guess. But it's actually a song about a cat. Chris Stein wrote the song for then girlfriend Deborah Harry.

“I wrote that song to cheer Debbie up because she was down as her gray cat named Sunday Man had run away whilst we were away on tour.”

The B side is one of Blondie's best rockers, just snappy enough to inspire new wave rock fans all over the world.
