Jane Birkin : Ex Fan Des Sixties

In February of 1978, the English actress/ French icon who is profiled in a documentary called "The Mother of All Babes" released an album called "Ex Fan Des Sixties". The somewhat cheesy title track name drops everyone from The Doors and The Byrds, to The Beatles and Brian Jones. So I'm posting it for your amusement.

In 1978 Jane was also a model for Lee Cooper jeans and an actress who appeared in films based on Agatha Christie novels.

40 Year Itch: The Mother of All Babes

   Four years after portraying a Lolita-like character on the cover and in performances of Serge Gainsbourg's Histoire de Melody Nelson, English actress and singer Jane Birkin cut a disco single called "Lolita Go Home".

The song was written by her partner, Gainsbourg, with whom she shared a tempestuous relationship. In 1975 he directed Birkin in a strange, sexually charged film which shared the name of their biggest hit, " Je T'aime Moi Non Plus".

  In the 1975 disco song, Birkin is the Lolita whom other women are calling a "pute" or whore. There is an amazing video on YouTube of Birkin writhing on a piano as she sings the song on TV, but embedding has been disabled by whoever posted it so you get this.

I've learned from reading other articles about Birkin that offering a lot of pictures of Jane is the best way to satisfy curious visitors to the page.

But this is a music blog.

Not a blog about sex symbols.

So you'll probably be dissatisfied.

Two years before they rescued Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks released the poor selling but wonderful sounding Buckingham Nicks. The album has yet to be released on CD.

 

As you can imagine outtakes from the album cover shoot are surprisingly popular for an album that failed to chart.

Formed in the UK by former Nice bass player and vocalist Lee Jackson, Jackson Heights suffered poor sales despite the band's very approachable progressive rock sounds. 

Their fourth and final album is best remembered for its widely celebrated album cover.

The same year she played Brigette Bardot's lover in Don Juan 1973, Jane Birkin released  her Serge Gainsbourg produced debut Di Doo Dah. Anyone who has heard her breathy vocals on Gainsbourg's classic Histoire de Melody Nelson must at least be curious. The video below is shot on a topless beach.
