On May 20, 1979 New Wave artists finally overtook Art Garfunkel's "Bright Eyes" as Blondie, Roxy Music and M's "Pop Muzik" topped the U.K. charts at 1, 2 and 3. David Bowie, The Police, The Undertones, Sparks, The Dickies and The Damned also made the Top 20.

On April 1 1979, the sound of the 80's entered the U.K. charts as "Pop Muzik" debuted at #54. Awash in synthesizers, Robin Scott's splash of euro-trash is a silly, absolutely meaningless and glorious confection that became a worldwide hit. Art Garfunkel's "Bright Eyes" kept M from peaking above UK#2, the same place the song finished in the Village Voice's first Pazz and Jop singles poll ( behind Ian Dury's "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick". However the song did make it to #1 in the US. The little baby girl  on the cover of the 45 is Scott's daughter Berenice, now a singer in her own right.
