The Clash : 1977
Welcome to 1977, the year that punk broke loose in the UK with such stellar recordings as Never Mind the Bollocks, Spiral Scratch, Damned Damned Damned, New Boots and Panties !!, Pink Flag and debuts from The Clash, The Saints and The Jam . In the US we got debut albums from Talking Heads, Television, Suicide and Mink DeVille. And that's just from the CBGBs scene in New York. The year gave us two classic albums each from David Bowie, Iggy Pop, The Stranglers, Cheap Trick, and The Ramones as well as legendary albums from Fleetwood Mac, Earth Wind and Fire, Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, Queen, Eric Clapton and Bob Marley and the Wailers. Over the next year, I'll look back on one of the great years in music history, so called annus mirabilis of punk, 1977.
We will begin with The Clash's New Year's Day show at The Roxy, a former gay club that became the focal point for London's punk rock scene. All of the great bands played here and so did some of the worst.
