Check The Rhyme

Chic : Le Freak (album version)

On December 2, 1978 Chic's "Le Freak" topped the US R+ B charts for the first of five straight weeks. It would top the US Hot 100 the following year on January 20 for three weeks. When it was released, it became the biggest single in Warner/Elektra/Atlantic history.

Nile Rodgers explains how the song came from a New Year's Eve incident at Studio 54 trying to get inside to see Grace Jones. When the and Bernard Edwards were denied entrance, they went around the corner to Rodgers's apartment and wrote a funky tune about Studio 54 called "Fuck Off, Fuck Studio 54". The changed the lyrics to make the song about a new dance called the Freak, a dance neither of them knew how to do.
