Killing Joke : Wardance
In early March of 1980 Killing Joke released the single "Wardance" b/w "Pssyche" on their own Malicious Damage records label, The picture sleeve features a wartorns cene with Fred Astaire dancing in top hat and coattails.
Those wary of the coronavirus these days may not appreciate how the single begins with a violent series of coughs before launching into a tune that pounds away at the inside of your skull. Every instrument including Jaz Coleman's voice are turned up to 11.
Believing it had be someone famous recording under an assumed name, the legendary British radio DJ John Peel gave "Wardance" heavy rotation on his show.
Smash Hits reviewed the single in its Independents column, writing:
"Wardance"...starts off with a bass riff that comes very, but VERY close to the Scars' "Adylt/ery" but then builds into a magnificent wall of sound epic with a touch of synthesiser in there amid the guitar and drums. The other side "Pssyche" is just as good if not better. Fast and furious, it's a raging,angry record that positively scorches its way over the might bass line from Youth ( late of The 4x2's) and into your brain. Great record--buy at once and play as loud as possible. Excellent artwork also.
