Who started the 80's at the Top of the Charts?

Michael Jackson : Rock With You

On January 5, 1980 Michael Jackson's "Rock With You" topped the US R+B charts for the first of six straight weeks. Jackson's album Off The Wall returned to #1 on the R+B charts for the seventh of 16 weeks, dethroning Masterjam by Rufus and Chaka Khan.

"Rock With You" was written by Heatwave's Rod Temperton who also wrote "Thriller" and "Off The Wall". It would hit #1 on the pop charts on January 19 and hold that position for four weeks.

As strong a year as Jackson had, 1980 was really Kenny Rogers' year. His album Kenny was in the middle of a 25 week run at the top of the country charts. A follow-up album, Gideon, and a greatest hits collection led to 30 weeks at the top. In 1979 he had 31 weeks at the top of the country album charts, mostly thanks to The Gambler.

Rogers is supposedly worth $250 million today even if he's unrecognizable.

The #1 song in the US is KC and the Sunshine Band's last #1 hit, the disco ballad "Please Don't Go". The #1 album was Donna Summer's On The Radio: Greatest Hits Volume I + II.

In the U.K., the #1 song was Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall" while Rod Stewart's Greatest Hits topped the UK album charts.
