Penguin Cafe Orchestra : The Sound of Someone You Love Who's Going Away and It Doesn't Matter
All it took was a bad plate of fish somewhere in France for founder Simon Jeffries to come up with the concept of The Penguin Cafe Orchestra, which is what, exactly? Chamber music performed with humor, deep feeling and a sense of avant garde adventure I suppose. Actually most people don't try to define PCO or their debut, which was released in 1976 on Brian Eno's Obscure Label and originally available only by mail order. It is a soundtrack to its own world. And if 1976 has given us a more beautiful song than "The Sound of Someone You Love Who's Going Away and It Doesn't Matter", I've yet to hear it.
When I discovered Penguin Cafe Orchestra I went out ant bought all the albums I could find and just binged on them for a month.
