Funk Punk pioneers A Certain Ratio release Shack Up

A Certain Ratio : Shack Up

On August 4, 1980 Manchester's A Certain Ratio released their classic cover of Banbarra's "Shack Up". As some of noted the single, recorded for 50 pounds, is what their Factory labelmates Joy Division might have sounded like if they were a funk band.

The band had a unique fashion sense, remembers historian Dave Haslam. "Close-cropped hair, baggy khaki shorts." They also lucked out by scoring a drummer as talented as Bruce Smith. "Shack Up" made an impact on both sides of the Atlantc.

For 25 years the talented Denise Johnson sang with A Certain Ratio. Her death last week was met with tributes from Manchester bands spanning decades

Check out the original 1975 single which I wrote about five years ago.
